The day starts outside.

Your alarm goes off and the social apps lock. They stay locked until you have hit your step count.

You reach for the phone before your feet reach the floor.

The alarm is not the problem

It goes off, you turn it off, and then forty minutes disappear into a feed while you are still horizontal.

Willpower at 6:30am is thin

Deciding to go outside is easy at night and impossible in the dark. Gate makes the decision the night before.

Blocking alone does nothing

A timer you can dismiss is a suggestion. Gate opens for one thing: the walk you meant to take.

How it works

01

Set the alarm, pick the apps

Choose which apps close with the alarm. Instagram, TikTok, whatever the morning usually takes.

02

They lock when it rings

Open one and you get a quiet screen instead of a feed, with your step count on it. No red, no lecture.

03

Walk your step goal

Walk. The ring fills as you go. When you hit the count you set, the apps open on their own and the light arrives with them.

The app

Four surfaces, one job.

6:30The alarm rings dim, and the apps you picked close with it.

Done for todayThe ring closes, the apps open on their own.

Your steps stay on your phone.

Gate reads step counts through Apple Health and locks apps through Screen Time. Both run on the device. Nothing about your walks, your apps, or your mornings is sent to a server, because there is no server. No account, no email required, no analytics on your movement.

Questions

Can I get around it?

Yes. Gate is a gate, not a cage. There is a way past every lock and you can turn the whole thing off in settings. It works because it puts a pause between you and the feed, not because it traps you.

What counts as outside?

Steps counted after your alarm, from Apple Health. Treadmill steps count too if that is the morning you have. The 2,000 is a default you can move up or down.

Does it drain the battery?

No. Step counting is handled by the phone's motion coprocessor, which is already running.

Which apps can be gated?

Anything Screen Time can see, which is nearly everything. Most people pick two or three.
